Lara Goitein, MD, is a Harvard trained physician specializing in intensive care and lung medicine in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the founding medical director of Clinician-Directed Performance Improvement, a hospital quality program.  Her professional interests include quality improvement in healthcare, end-of-life care, the training of new doctors, physician burnout, and improving communication with patients and families. She is an editorial board member and frequent writer for the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine, and also writes in the lay press, including the New York Review of Books.

Dr. Goitein states: In my experience, patients often don’t get the explanations they desperately need. My goal is to help patients to better understand their own health and medical care. My hope is that better understanding will give patients and their families the ability to ask the right questions of their own doctors, and to develop a sense of purpose and effective self-advocacy.
